Suppression of thermal conduction in non-cooling flow clusters
نویسنده
چکیده
Recent X-ray observations have revealed a universal temperature profile of the intracluster gas of non-cooling flow clusters which is flat for r ≤ 0.2r180. Numerical simulations, however, obtain a steeper temperature profile in the inner region. We study the effect of thermal conduction on the intracluster gas in non-cooling flow clusters in light of these observations, using the steep temperature profiles obtained by authors of numerical simulations. We find that given 10 yr for the intracluster gas to evolve, thermal conduction should be suppressed from the classical value by a factor ∼ 10 in order to explain the observations.

Anisotropic Thermal Conduction and the Cooling Flow Problem in Galaxy Clusters
We examine the long-standing cooling flow problem in galaxy clusters with 3D MHD simulations of isolated clusters including radiative cooling and anisotropic thermal conduction along magnetic field lines. The central regions of the intracluster medium (ICM) can have cooling timescales of ∼ 200 Myr or shorter—in order to prevent a cooling catastrophe the ICMmust be heated by some mechanism such ...
متن کاملAre X-ray Clusters Cooled by Heat Conduction to the Surrounding Intergalactic Medium?
I show that X-ray clusters would have cooled substantially over a Hubble time by transport of heat from their hot interior to the surrounding intergalactic medium, if the heat conductivity had not been heavily suppressed relative to the Spitzer value (e.g. due to magnetic fields). The suppression is required in order for the observed abundance of hot X-ray clusters to be consistent with predict...
متن کاملThermal Conduction in Clusters of Galaxies
We estimate the thermal conductivity of a weakly collisional magnetized plasma with chaotic magnetic field fluctuations. When the fluctuation spectrum extends over two or more decades in wave-vector, we find that thermal conduction is very efficient; the conduction coefficient is only a factor ∼ 5 below the classical Spitzer estimate. We suggest that conduction could play a significant role in ...
متن کاملModels of Galaxy Clusters with Thermal Conduction
We present a simple model of hot gas in galaxy clusters, assuming hydrostatic equilibrium and energy balance between radiative cooling and thermal conduction. For five clusters, A1795, A1835, A2199, A2390 and RXJ1347.5-1145, the model gives a good description of the observed radial profiles of electron density and temperature, provided we take the thermal conductivity κ to be about 30% of the S...
متن کاملRegulation of Thermal Conductivity in Hot Galaxy Clusters by Mhd Turbulence
The role of thermal conduction in regulating the thermal behavior of cooling flows in galaxy clusters is reexamined. Recent investigations have shown that the anisotropic Coulomb heat flux caused by a magnetic field in a dilute plasma drives a dynamical instability. A long standing problem of cooling flow theory has been to understand how thermal conduction can offset radiative core losses with...
